The power of community

On their path to enlightenment practitioners of Buddhism ‘take refuge’ in the Three Jewels - the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. The word Sangha means Community and in this case refers to the community of practitioners who support one another on the spiritual path. In early Buddhism this meant the ordained monastic community, however it could now apply to any community of like-minded individuals sharing study, meditation, and practice. A healthy Sangha provides grounding and accountability for each to live out the Dharma (teachings). In our Yoga practice we may be attached to one studio, or even one teacher. More likely, we move between several studios and many teachers. Each brings their own flavour to the practice and we gravitate to those which resonate to our own energies and philosophical foundation. How do you feel when you enter the studio for a class? Does it feel like a familiar and loved environment? Are the instructors and students friendly and supportive? Can you truly find equanimity in your practice there? No situation is perfect but I hope that on balance, the answers are ‘Yes, Yes, and Yes!’. This could be your Sangha, your people! Be sure to cherish them! Also, don’t forget that you are a part of that Sangha. You add to the Community by bringing your energy and attitude to the practice. Enjoy the feeling of belonging, of shared time and a shared love of this ancient practice and philosophy of Yoga.
