The Power of Silence

Listen to silence. It has so much to say.

- Rumi (Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī)

Each day you are bombarded by images and sounds, some you choose, some are imposed. The noise of traffic, trains, and airplanes. The thrum of conversations in the lift, the office, the cafe. Of dogs barking, birds tweeting, phones calling. And despite feeling overwhelmed there are still so many you choose to hear - the TV, music and movies, shorts and songs. Do you ever switch off? How often do you find a chance - or have the motivation - to choose silence?

Consider what it would be like to make time to be still - physically, mentally, emotionally. To seek out quiet and solitude at some time in the day. Creating your own escape, consciously slowing the flood, letting the eddies and currents in your mind start to quell. To turn attention inward, to listen to the gentle stirrings from within as you reorient to your internal compass.

Let your mind become empty of directed thought; let the absence of external sound encourage the subtle music of your deepest self to make itself known.

Don’t wait till you’re asleep to find silence or one day you’ll wake to find your waking hours were really sleep-walking through life, never recognising what was important.

Find your silence, listen to what it has to say.
